Meet the Artist
Andy Buttery was born in West Yorkshire, leaving aged nine with his family to live in Irvine, Scotland. Staying for five years, he then moved again to Lancashire where he has lived for all his adult life.
His early working life was in low-skilled manual jobs and semi-skilled factory work, later progressing to more technical positions. Finding the typical corporate job lacking of all creative interest, Andy decided to take voluntary redundancy in 2000 to study Graphic Design full-time. After graduating with a First Class Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bolton University, Andy set up Tor Design and practiced for ten years servicing local businesses. During this time Andy also studied for a Masters Degree in Interior Design at the University of Central Lancashire, graduating with Merit in 2007. Andy took a long break from Graphic Design in 2014 and returned to a corporate job in the interiors planning software industry. After seven years he left the corporate world again in late 2021, and this became the perfect opportunity to explore his life-long desire to become an illustrator/artist whilst expanding other business activities.
Outside of work, Andy has a great passion for the outdoors, being a life-long runner and in more recent years a mountain biker. Living close to the fells he has spent countless hours enjoying the spectacular ruggedness of the Rossendale hills and surrounding valleys. These hills provide much of the inspiration for Andy’s art. Having an intimate knowledge of his surroundings, his artwork is a culmination of a life spent outdoors combined with creative talent and an exceptional ability with vectors.
Andy lives in the popular East Lancashire village of Helmshore with his partner and 3 young children. He keeps fit through running, mountain biking and walking, and relaxes by trout fishing and attending to his allotment.
